The 15th AUSKF National Championships – June. 30 ~ July 02, 2023

All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF) National Championships were held in Auburn Hills, MI from June 30 – July 2nd, 2023. Over 400 participants from across the United States competed in this prestigious event at the O’Arena at Oakland University. GLKC was represented by Collin Shinohara (Senior Youth Division), Takuya Manome Sensei (Shinpan) and Robin Tanaka Sensei (Team MWKF Coach). Many of our club members also volunteered their time to make this tournament a success. We look forward to the next National Championships in three years’ time!

JCCC Kendo Club Junior Tournament – April. 30, 2023 in Toronto, Canada

GLKC Juniors participated in Ontario Junior Kendo Championship hosted by JCCC Kendo Club in Toronto on April 30, 2023. All the GLKC juniors did their very best! Thank you so much JCCC Kendo Club and Kendo Ontario Junior Development Program for organizing this Kendo event!

Our juniors competed in NON-BOGU (10 yrs & Under), NON-BOGU (11-18 yrs), BOGU (10 yrs & Under), BOGU (11-13 yrs), TEAM (NON-BOGU) and TEAM-BOGU (13 yrs & Under).
Lots of learnings and goals for next time! Look forward to seeing you all in future tournaments!

Kendo Seminar and the 25th Annual Detroit Open Kendo Tournament, February 18th and 19th

GLKC members participated in the Kendo Seminar on February 18th and the 25th Annual Detroit Open Kendo Tournament on February 19th hosted by the Detroit Kendo Dojo. Thank you Detroit Kendo Dojo for hosting this Kendo event!

Special guest, Komeda Toshiro Sensei from Kyushu Gakuin High School led the seminar on February 18th, 2023. GLKC members greatly enjoyed and learned a lot from the seminar for future Keiko practices and shiai tournaments.

GLKC members participated in the tournament on Sunday, February 19th.

Collin Shinohara finished third in the Senior Youth Individual Division. Congratulations!

GLKC New Year’s Gathering and Setsubun – Feb. 05, 2023

GLKC had a casual New Year’s gathering and “Setsubun” Japanese Spring Traditional Bean Scattering Ritual on February 05, 2023. “Setsubun” has the intent to ward off evil spirits (Oni – Japanese Demons) and to bring good fortune (Fuku – good fortune) to the household. It was great seeing everyone and looking forward to a happy and healthy 2023!

MWKF Team Practice @ GLKC

Great Lakes Kendo Club hosted the MWKF Team Practice on December 31st, 2022. We welcomed the following special guest instructors:

Ryo Tamaru (Renshi 6 Dan, Canada)

Kensaku Maemoto (6 Dan, Belgium)

Ayana Nakamura (6 Dan, Detroit)

It was a great opportunity to learn from former national team members, as well as to further expand and deepen our kendo ties. Thank you so much to all the sensei and the participants for making this a very special practice!

Midwest 32nd Annual Taikai – Oct. 22, 2022

GLKC participated in the Midwest 32nd Annual Taikai on Saturday Oct. 22, 2022. Our members competed in the individual and team matches. Thank you Seishinkan Kendo Dojo for hosting this tournament!

GLKC Adult Team was a mixed team with Seishinkan and Kurotaka Dojo.
The Senior Youth mixed team (Collin) placed first!
The Junior Youth mixed team (Kotaro, Shuntaro) placed third!
Kotaro finished in third in Junior Youth Individual!
Congratulations!

Michigan Cup – Sept. 11, 2022

Michigan Cup Family Tournament (Sept. 11th, 2022)

GLKC participated in the Michigan Cup Family Tournament on Sunday Sept. 11th, 2022. Our members competed in the Youth 12 years and under and Adult Mixed Team competition. Thank you Koyokai for organizing this tournament!

It was a really warm and friendly environment and it was great to see everyone after such a long time away from competition!
